LNG ship wins London award


Crude tanker concept ship is fuelled by liquefied natural gas.



The Lloyd's List Global Award for the shipping industry's best innovation project 2011 was won by DNV at a ceremony held this week at the London Hilton Hotel. Chief Operating Officer Ioannis Kourmatzis accepted the award on behalf of DNV.

When nominating, DNV chose Triality as its candidate among several innovation projects. Triality is a crude oil tanker concept that is fuelled by liquefied natural gas (LNG), has a hull shape that removes the need for ballast water and is said to considerably reduce emissions.

"I'm really pleased and honoured to accept this award on behalf of a lot of competent, hardworking DNV colleagues," said Kourmatzis, DNV's COO Europe & North Africa. "When the financial crisis hit the shipping industry in late 2008, DNV decided to increase its focus on innovation and new opportunities."

For Triality, a group of some 30 mostly young people representing a wide set of disciplines was selected. Their results were presented externally by DNV's CEO Henrik Madsen to customers and the media in London in early December last year.

Since then, Triality has been widely communicated to a number of customers and stakeholders.
