New York ferry to switch to LNG


Staten Island Ferry is to be converted to run on liquefied natural gas.

The Staten Island Ferry is to be converted to run on liquefied natural gas (LNG) following the approval of a federal government grant.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced that New York will receive a total of $16.2 million in grants, $2.3 million of which will be used to convert the ferry to be powered by LNG.

The Staten Island Ferry is a passenger ferry service operated by the New York City Department of Transportation that runs between the boroughs of Manhattan and Staten Island.

The ferry departs Manhattan from the Staten Island Ferry Whitehall Terminal, South Ferry, at the southernmost tip of Manhattan near Battery Park. On Staten Island, the ferry arrives and departs from St. George Ferry Terminal on Richmond Terrace, near Richmond County Borough Hall and Richmond County Supreme Court. Service is provided 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The ferry has been a municipal service since 1905, and currently carries over 21 million passengers annually on the 5.2-mile (8.4 kilometre) run.
