Wärtsilä to supply fuel-efficient power solution

System will estimate fuel consumption and advise on the optimal method of operating the vessel to save fuel.

Wärtsilä has been awarded the contract to supply an integrated solution for power generation, power distribution, and propulsion for a new Diving Support & Construction Vessel (DSCV) currently under construction in Singapore.

The order has been placed by Keppel Singmarine, the Singapore-based builder of the vessel. The contract includes the vessel's main power generation system, the Wärtsilä Low Loss Concept full electric and automation system, and a complete integrated propulsion system. The vessel will operate on marine diesel oil (MDO).

Wärtsilä will deliver the systems during the beginning of 2012, and the ship is scheduled to be delivered in the second quarter of 2013.

The vessel will be owned and operated by the Dutch public company SBM Offshore N.V., the holding company of a group of international, marine technology orientated companies. Its business is to serve on a global basis the offshore oil and gas industry by supplying engineered products, vessels and systems, and offshore oil and gas production services.

The system features the patented Low Loss Concept and the ECOMeter, which is part of the Wärtsilä Integrated Automation System. This estimates fuel consumption and advises on the optimal means of operating the vessel in order to save fuel and the environment.

"Our expert know-how on efficient systems with maximum redundancy is the key to our success in ship systems. Customers value the integrated systems approach that mitigates project completion risks in complex offshore vessel projects," said Magnus Miemois, Vice President, Offshore, Wärtsilä Ship Power. "This order is yet another example of a contract wherein Wärtsilä's ability to supply a totally integrated solution is of significant importance to the customer, interested in improved overall vessel efficiency," Wärtsilä added.
