China to add 6.1m bpd refining capacity

China, the world's second-largest consumer of oil, is likely to add around 3.7 million barrels-per-day (bpd) of new refining capacity between 2010 and 2015 with an addional 2.4 million bpd also planned, according to industry officials.

The planned additional capacity forms part of the country's ambitious strategy to fuel its future economic growth. Of the 3.7 million bpd planned, approximately 1.2 million bpd are still pending government approval..

Proposals have also been put forward for an additional 2.4 million barrels-per-day of processing capacity. The proposals are at the early stages of planning.
