ABB has released its Generations 2025 publication, compiling articles that examine energy efficiency and digitalization developments in the maritime sector during what the company describes as a pivotal year for decarbonization.

The publication, released December 18, brings together insights on market-ready solutions, greenhouse gas pricing measures, and technological innovations aimed at supporting the shipping industry's transition to lower emissions.

According to ABB, the articles focus on fuel-agnostic solutions designed to provide ship owners with flexibility based on energy efficiency, emissions reduction, and cost-effectiveness. The company states that its approach supports both conventional technologies and alternative energy sources.

The 2025 edition includes analysis of digital tools for enhancing vessel efficiency and emissions profiles, the application of artificial intelligence in port operations, and the relationship between automation and maritime crews. ABB claims that "digital crew" systems are complementing rather than replacing human capabilities aboard ships.

The publication also examines how regulatory measures encouraging ship efficiency could address underwater radiated noise, an environmental concern in maritime operations.

Technical contributions in the publication cover ABB's Onboard DC Grid power system, which the company claims reduces fuel consumption and emissions. The articles also feature a new dynamic positioning control system and test results for ABB Dynafin propulsion technology.

Looking at future developments, the publication discusses ABB's work on integrating fuel cells and nuclear Small Modular Reactors into marine operations as low-emission power technologies.

ABB provides electrification and automation technology across multiple industries. The company's Automation business unit serves process, hybrid, and maritime industries.

The Generations 2025 publication is available for download from ABB's website.
