UK P&I Club has joined SEA-LNG, the coalition supporting the use of LNG and methane-based marine fuels, adding insurance sector expertise to the organisation's membership.

The mutual marine insurer, founded in 1869, provides protection and indemnity insurance to shipowners, operators, and charterers globally. The club's membership aims to reinforce safety frameworks and risk assessment practices as LNG adoption increases across the maritime industry.

UK P&I Club has provided services to LNG carriers for over 50 years, according to the announcement. The insurer offers guidance on bunkering practices, operational readiness, and incident prevention measures for LNG systems on board vessels.

Peter Keller, chairman of SEA-LNG, said: "The addition of the UK P&I Club marks another important step in strengthening SEA-LNG's cross-sector collaboration. Insurers play a pivotal role in enabling the energy transition, providing the confidence and frameworks shipowners need to invest."

Andrew Taylor, chief executive officer of UK P&I Club, commented: "The UK P&I Club has been supporting Members using LNG as a marine fuel for over 50 years, and throughout that time we have prioritised safe, controlled, and well-managed implementation. As LNG uptake accelerates, our focus remains on ensuring that safety, operational integrity, and risk-management discipline evolve in step with technology advancements and regulatory expectations."

Taylor added that the collaboration would enhance the club's efforts to support members through its Safety & Risk Management initiatives and Gas and Alternative Fuels Centre of Excellence.

SEA-LNG is a UK-registered not-for-profit organisation with members across the LNG value chain, including fuel providers, users, engine and asset suppliers, and class societies. The coalition was established in 2016 under Keller's chairmanship.

UK P&I Club insures over 270 million tonnes of owned and chartered shipping through its international offices and claims network. The club holds an 'A-/Stable' rating from Standard & Poor's and is managed by Thomas Miller, an insurance and professional services provider.
