Monitoring service for Euronav 'proves' bunker savings: Hempel

Coatings firm says 'significant proportion' of improved propulsion efficiency was directly attributable to Hempaguard X7.

Hull coatings specialist Hempel says the performance monitoring service it has been providing to Euronav "proves" that the tanker owner has achieved bunker savings through the use of its hull coatings solution, Hempaguard X7.

"Many hull coatings claim to improve hull smoothness and so reduce fuel consumption and associated emissions. But proving the results requires accurately gathering performance data from a vessel's hull and propeller system. This is the service we now provide to Euronav," Hempel explained.

Working in collaboration with DNV GL, Hempel's Hull Performance Team began monitoring the hull and propeller performance on three Euronav vessels six months before the application of Hempaguard X7.

Six months after application, Hempel says the data "clearly showed a total increase in propulsion efficiency, of which a significant portion was directly attributable to the Hempaguard hull coating".

As a result, Euronav decided to switch two more vessels - the VLCC Sandra and the Suezmax Maria - to Hempaguard X7 in the middle of 2016.

"Hempel's hull performance monitoring programme is enabling us to accurately determine the performance of our propulsion systems, including the propeller and hull coating. This gives us complete insight into our return on investment. But more importantly, it also enables us to make adjustments and so improve long-term efficiency," said Theodore Mavraidis, Fleet Technical Manager, Euronav Ship Management (Hellas) Ltd.

Based on silicone, Hempaguard X7 is said to provide a smooth, low-surface-energy, repellent surface with unique fouling control properties. A hydro gel micro layer prevents fouling organisms firmly adhering while the silicone polymers facilitate self-cleaning.

Hempaguard X7 is recommended by Hempel for all ship types whose owners wish to benefit from flexible trading, bunker savings and fouling defence at any speed. It is said to be especially suitable for ships operating with long service intervals, very long idle periods or in warm waters.
