German firm supplies fuel savings system

Decision support system aims to reduce fuel costs and ship emissions.

Lehmann & Michels GmbH, German specialists in the production of technical measuring instruments for large engines, and Eniram Ltd., Finnish provider of decision support systems for the shipping industry, have signed an exclusive distribution agreement for the German market.

With immediate effect Lehmann & Michels GmbH is now able to supply Eniram's Dynamic Trimming Assistant(DTA), a decision support system for environmentally friendly and more energy efficient seafaring.

The DTA constantly measures the dynamic trim of the vessel and processes all available and relevant machine and navigation data. Using its self-learning characteristics, the DTA then displays the optimum trim for the prevailing circumstances. This enables to the crew to easily minimize the vessel's water resistance, decrease fuel consumption and thus reduce emissions.

First installations of the DTA system in cruise and freight vessels have demonstrated considerable savings in fuel costs and emissions. Fuel savings of up to 5% have been made possible by using this system.

Rellingen-based Lehmann & Michels specialises in cylinder pressure and shaft power monitoring instruments for the shipping industry. The LEMAG Shaftpower system measures the actual power output of the ship's propulsion engine. The integration of LEMAG Shaftpower in the Dynamic Trimming Assistant means that exact performance and consumption measurement data is not only displayed, but also fully analyzed and utilised.

"We help the crew on board cruise and freight vessels to make decisions based on accurate information rather than forecasts or estimates," said Henrik Dahl, Managing Director of Eniram. "The dynamic data of vessel attitude enables the crew to constantly optimise fuel efficiency."

Speaking about the partnership, Eero Lehtovaara, Director of Marine Operations for Eniram said "Lehmann & Michels is a very important co-operation partner for Eniram, as the LEMAG Shaftpower system provides the DTA with extremely accurate information for the analysis."
