ECA fuel management system launched


System is said to switch fuels and mix them in correct ratios in accordance with ECA regulations.



Sweden's Jowa Technology AB has developed the Jowa Technology Fuel Management System - a fully automated system which the company says both changes fuels and mixes them in correct ratios in accordance with sulphur regulations.

The system is based on Jowa Technology's Diesel Switch DSMK II (DSMKII), which the company says is the world’s first fully-automated switch over and blending system with an approval certificate from Germanischer Lloyd. The system mixes HFO and low-sulphur MDO/MGO to the precisely correct sulphur content for traffic in Emission Control Areas (ECA). The result is significantly lower fuel costs and increased operational reliability.

In order to accommodate recent regulation changes for vessels operating in ECA's, Jowa Technology is now launching a fully automated fuel management system consisting of an advanced Diesel Switch with sensors and intelligent computer control.

The system is said to be so advanced that it both changes fuels during the voyage without any interruption to operations as well as mixes HFO and low-sulphur fuel in the correct ratios. This allows the sulphur content of the fuel to be precisely prepared in accordance with the requirements for the respective ECAs.

The Jowa Homogenizer and Jowa Cooler can also be included in the fuel management system in order to get a complete interacting system, the company says.

Accurate documentation

In all ECAs there are strict requirements in regard to documentation of fuels and their use. This information is routinely checked in port. Jowa Diesel Switch DSMK II therefore also has an integral documentation system, which logs all information about operation, fuel and times in accordance with official requirements.

The information can be presented and delivered as a printout or on data media, and may also be viewed on screen.

Turnkey system with quick and low-cost installation

Jowa Diesel Switch DSMK II is available in five different sizes, covering all fuel systems.

Commenting on the installation process, Jowa Technology said: "The system installs in an existing fuel system, retrofit, with a minimum of pipes needing to be run. The installation process is very easy and simple, regardless of whether it involves the construction of a new vessel or is installed later Whether M/E and/or A/E the solution is available."

Type approved by Germanischer Lloyd

Once the system is in place, it is fully ready for operation, every unit being checked and certified by Germanischer Lloyd before leaving the Jowa Technology factory. This is to prove that the Jowa Diesel Switch DSMK II is designated to the owner’s specific demands.
