Fuel switch unit gets GL type approval

Automatic change over and blending unit receives type approval from Germanischer Lloyd.

Switzerland-based Aquametro AG has announced that automatic change over and blending unit “Diesel Switch MKII” has received type approval from Germanischer Lloyd (GL).

Following the introduction of MARPOL Annex VI amendments, it has become necessary for ships to use fuel oil with limited sulphur content when operating in Emission Control Areas (ECAs).

According to Aquametro, fuel can be blended onboard using the Diesel Switch MKII to meet the required sulphur limits.

The Diesel Switch MKII is equipped with a 3-way blending valve, which adjusts the fuel ratio of heavy fuel oil (HFO) and marine diesel oil (MDO)/marine gas oil (MGO) in relation to a set value, which is controlled by a logic controller.

The product includes manual and pneumatic valves, temperature and pressure sensors and the logic controller with touch screen display, which controls the switch over process.

Aquametro says that the logic controller regulates even and permissible temperature changes (i.e. MAN less than 2°C/min.); controls and monitors the fuel temperature in relation to viscosity and controls the lowest permissible viscosity. Furthermore, during the blending procedure it is said to guarantee that valid limits of sulphur content will be adjusted, controlled and stored in a special history file.

A special feature of Diesel Switch MKII is a compatibility check for both fuel qualities prior to any blending or change over operation.

Diesel Switch MKII is said to be simple to install - for both newbuilds and retrofits - and easy to handle. Each complete mounted unit is also tested before installation on board.
