Hanjin receives first 'fuel-efficient' mega-boxship


10,000TEU class containership is equipped with a fuel-efficient engine that can cut fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.



Hanjin Shipping has announced that it has received its first 10,000TEU class containership, which is said to lower fuel consumption and emissions.

Named Hanjin Korea, unlike the company's container vessels usually named after different cities around the world, it is the first of the series of five 10,000TEU class ships ordered from Samsung Heavy Industries.

Hanjin Korea is equipped with a fuel-efficient and eco-friendly engine that can reduce both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The ship's specifications have been included below.

- Loadable Capacity: 9,954TEU

- Gross Tonnage: 118,000 Tons (Dead Weight)

- Engine Output: 93,000 Horse Power

- Length: 349 Meters / Width: 45.6 Meters

- Speed: 25.1 Knots (Approximately 50km/h)

According to Hanjin Shipping, the vessel will be deployed in Asia-Europe trade soon after the delivery, sometime in the beginning of July. Please find below a list of the ports of call.

- Qingdao - Shanghai - Ningbo - Hong Kong - Singapore - Port Said - Rotterdam - Hamburg - Antwerp - Port Said - Singapore - Hong Kong - Qingdao

Eun Young Choi, Chairwoman of Hanjin Shipping, sponsoring the naming ceremony commented, "The first ship I ever named was Hanjin Seattle back in 1988. Since then and for the past 20 years I named approximately 39 ships. However, Hanjin Korea, the first 10,000TEU class vessel is most significant for me and for the company as well. With this 10,000TEU class ship, we have accelerated the era of mega-sized vessels in the global shipping market. We shall continue our journey as the world's leading shipping carrier with even more efficient fleet and customer service."

Meanwhile, the rest of the series are scheduled to be delivered by year 2011.
