Countdown to Copenhagen (Part 1): Global CO2 emissions from marine fuels

Bunker Index looks at global CO2 emissions from marine fuels in the first of a series of articles in the run up to Copenhagen.

This week Bunker Index will be publishing a series of articles in the build up to the United Nations Climate Change Conference, due to be held between December 7 and December 18, 2009.

In today's article Bunker Index has provided a breakdown of global CO2 emissions from marine bunkers according to recent data published by the International Energy Agency (IEA).

According to the data (in millions of tonnes of CO2), CO2 emissions from marine fuels worldwide have increased from 344.5 million tonnes in 1971 to 610.4 million tonnes in 2007, representing an increase of 265.9 million tonnes, or 77.2 percent, over this 36-year period.

A table with the data has been included below. CO2 emissions from marine fuels have also been compared against global emissions during the same period.
