New compression-ignited methanol engine launched


First commercial delivery to a client is scheduled for January 2019.

Swedish firm ScandiNAOS AB has announced the launch of its compression-ignited methanol engine. The first commercial delivery to a client is scheduled for January 2019.

The latest development follows the installation and testing of its spark-ignited methanol engine as part of the GreenPilot project.

Both methanol engines are based on the Scania 13L marine diesel engine and can be delivered either for variable-speed propulsion or single-speed genset applications.

ScandiNAOS AB performs system design and engine development for methanol in shipping and has been the technical coordinator for a number of methanol projects.

The Gothenburg-based company led the design work for the conversion of the Stena Germanica to methanol operation in 2015 and has provided the methanol engine and modifications of the onboard system for the GreenPilot project.

The GreenPilot project partners are ScandiNAOS, Swedish Maritime Technology Forum (part of RISE Research Institutes of Sweden), SSPA, the Swedish Transport Agency and the Swedish Maritime Administration.

Co-financers of the GreenPilot project are the Swedish Transport Agency, the Swedish Maritime Administration and Methanol Institute.
