Port of Rotterdam to study clean fuel bunkering facility at Krabbegors

All fuels supplied at the bunker station would be required to produce fewer emissions than traditional fuels.

Port of Rotterdam Authority and PitPoint.LNG have signed a letter of intent (LOI) to look into developing a multi-fuel bunkering facility for the refuelling of LNG and other alternative fuels.

The proposed location for the multi-fuel bunker station is Krabbegors, also known as Duivelseiland, which is an island and harbour in the seaport of Dordrecht, located at the juncture of the Oude Maas, Dordtse Kil and Beneden Merwede.

PitPoint.LNG claims Krabbegors is "the ideal location for a bunker station of this type". Dordrecht Inland Seaport is the most inland seaport in the Netherlands, it forms the meeting point of the shipping lanes for Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Antwerp (ARA), and is the main shipping route into Germany.

According to the agreement, Pitpoint.LNG and the Port of Rotterdam have agreed to work together to explore the feasibility of the multifuel bunker station. This will include holding discussions with potential customers, partners and suppliers to see how the supply and demand for cleaner fuels can be effectively matched.

A key aspect of the project is the requirement that all fuels supplied by the multi-fuel bunker station should produce fewer harmful emissions than traditional fuels; this includes fuel for ships, trucks and/or commercial vehicles.

Ronald Paul, COO for the Port of Rotterdam, remarked: "The establishment of a multi-fuel bunker station reflects the Port of Rotterdam's commitment to play a pioneering role, as the administrator of the biggest port in Europe, in energy transition within Europe. In this way, we will encourage the use of LNG as an alternative to fuel oil in shipping."

Jan Willem Drijver, managing director of PitPoint.LNG, said: "The realisation of such a multi-fuel bunker station forms part of PitPoint.LNG's strategy of developing a European LNG refuelling infrastructure. We are looking forward to working on this project together with the Port of Rotterdam and in this way enabling cleaner transport."

The project forms part of the 'Breakthrough LNG deployment in Inland Waterway Transport' initiative, which is co-financed by the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) of the European Union.
