Saga Cruises awards hybrid scrubber contract


Yara Marine Technologies to supply newbuild ferry, with an option for a second vessel.



Oslo-headquartered Yara Marine Technologies has been awarded a contract to supply open- and closed-loop hybrid scrubber systems for Saga Cruises' latest newbuild ferry, with an option for a second vessel.

The UK operator's ship is already under construction at Meyer Werft in Germany and is expected to be delivered in 2019.

With a combined engine power of 21.6 megawatts (MW), the vessel's four MAN engines will each be connected to a Yara Marine Technologies sulphur oxide (SOx) scrubber to effectively clean the exhaust gas emission down to the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) current and future emission requirements.

"The decision to install scrubber systems on the vessel demonstrates Saga's commitment to environmental regulations and reaffirms Yara Marine Technologies' strong position in the exhaust gas cleaning market," Strandberg added.

In November, Bunker Index reported that Yara Marine had won a contract to supply exhaust gas cleaning systems on four container feeder vessels operated by German shipmanager Jungerhans Maritime Services GmbH & Co.

In September, Yara Marine completed the installation of scrubbers aboard another cruise vessel, Norwegian Cruise Line's (NCL) Norwegian Jewel.

Since 2011, Yara Marine says it has designed and contracted more than 100 scrubber systems, with most of them already in operation.
