Bunker tanker collides with cargo vessel in Tokyo Bay: source

Both vessels are said to have suffered breaches during the incident near Kawasaki port.

A bunkering tanker has collided with a cargo vessel in Tokyo Bay, near the port of Kawasaki, Maritime Herald reports.

The cargo ship's bow is said to have hit the bunker tanker's portside, with both vessels suffering damage and breaches, but remaining seaworthy. Whilst the two vessels have not been named, Kawasaki Coast Guard has reportedly confirmed that the cargo vessel has a gross tonnage of 685 and the bunkering tanker a gross tonnage of 368.

The local water police and coast guard inspectors are said to have arrived at the scene after the local authorities were alerted.

A police investigation into the cause of the incident is reportedly under way, with preliminary findings allegedly suggesting that the cargo vessel violated the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs) and did not manoeuvre correctly.

Following the incident, both ships are said to have travelled to Kawasaki port for inspection and repairs.
