Experiment finds fuel additive helps reduce emissions

Results revealed emissions reduction, decreased carbon deposit and and a lower amount of sludge in the fuel tanks.

An experiment carried out onboard the Navigasa Cy cargo vessel Finita R has found that the Xbee fuel additive reduces NOx emissions.

The four-year experiment involving emission checks on the Wartsila W6L32 - 2760 Kw engines began after the chemical additive in the fuel was replaced in August 2012 by Xbee's 100% natural fuel additive.

Xbee is an organic fuel additive said to be compatible with all fuels and all engines. This fuel treatment disperses water, sludge and bacterial growth in the fuel. It was developed in Japan by Dr. Shinji Makino, PhD, combining biotechnology and enzymes extracted from tree leaves. It is distributed by AKX Group, an import-export company located in Quimper, France, and is marketed as Soltron in the United States.

Emission checks in February 2013 revealed a substantial reduction of carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particle emissions and a main engine overhaul in November of that year (with 21,268h) showed fully satisfactory cleaning and maintenance conditions. Valves, pistons and cylinder heads had very little carbon deposit, and rings were free of jamming. It was also noted that the fuel tanks were carrying the minimum amount of sludge.

In November 2015, Coterena - a Spanish company certified and approved by Bureau Veritas and Rina - carried out a third emissions test. Coterena reported that: "In view of registered values it obtained the motor is within the emission limit eNOX established in the regulation of NOx technical Code 2008 for main propulsion (Tier I 11.97) and very close to the reference values of manufacturer."

The main ship maintenance facts include:

- MP total number of running hours : 27,992h (17/11/2015)
- Last replacing of injectors : 21,268h (10/12/2013)
- Injectors running hours : 6,724h ( 26/11/2015)
- Turbocompressor reconditioning : 27,402h (25/09/2015)
- Cylinder heads reconditioning : 21,268h (10/12/2013)
