New record for Singapore as sales jump 6.2%

Asian port sells over 4.3 million tonnes for the first time in its history.

The port of Singapore recorded the biggest monthly sales figure in its history during the month of May, according to data released by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

Total sales at the world's leading bunker port rose by 254,000 tonnes, or 6.2 percent, to 4,363,700 tonnes last month, up from 4,109,700 tonnes in April. It is the first time that over 4.3 million tonnes have been sold in a single month at the Asian port.

In comparison with the corresponding month last year, volumes were up by 656,500 tonnes, or 17.7 percent. It is the thirteenth year-on-year monthly rise in a row, and the sixteenth in the last seventeen months.

Accumulated bunker sales for the year so far are 20,297,700 tonnes, which represents an increase of 2,271,000 tonnes, or 12.6 percent, on the first five months of 2015 (18,026,700 tonnes). The figure is also above the volumes sold during the corresponding period in 2014 (17,470,600 tonnes), 2013 (17,408,500 tonnes), and 2012 (18,091,100 tonnes). Hence, it is the highest figure ever recorded for the first five months of the year.

Sales of 380 centistoke (cSt) - Singapore's best-selling bunker grade - were up 161,100 tonnes, or 5.2 percent, to 3,229,900 tonnes in May compared to the previous month. It is the second-highest 380 cSt figure in the port's history. In comparison with the corresponding month last year, the figure is 426,000 tonnes, or 15.2 percent higher. It is also the best May result in the port's history, and the first time that sales of 380 cSt have surpassed 3.2 million tonnes in this month.

Month-on-month 500 cSt volumes increased by 148,200 tonnes, or 19.7 percent, to 899,400 tonnes - a new record for the port. Compared to last year, the figure was higher by 194,500 tonnes, or 27.6 percent.

Below are tables of monthly bunker sales in Singapore for each fuel grade since 2015 with accumulated annual totals in the bottom row.
