'Leading ship owner' orders shore power solution

Cavotec's AMPtainers are specially adapted containers fitted with shore power connection equipment.

Lugano-headquartered engineering group, Cavotec, says that 'a leading ship owner' has ordered six of its AMPtainers, which are specially adapted shipping containers fitted with shore power connection equipment that enable a vessel to connect to onshore power.

The contract forms part of a combined order with a value of more than EUR 9 million for its technology, which also includes its MoorMaster automated mooring system and the new Automatic Plug-in System (APS).

Alternative maritime power (AMP) systems, also known as cold ironing or shore power systems, allow ships to turn off their engines when in port and plug into shore-side electricity supply, thus helping to reduce pollution and fuel costs.

Cavotec's alternative maritime power systems can be fitted on ships, or, space permitting, on quaysides. The company offers shore-to-ship power connections, as well as deck and barge-based units.

Of the six AMPtainers that have been ordered, two will be mobile units and four will be installed on two 13,000-TEU container vessels, Cavotec said.
