LNG fuel systems to be installed on two cruise ships

Vessels are said to be the first cruise ships in the world to be fitted with dual fuel engines.

Bonn-based TGE Marine Gas Engineering GmbH (TGE) says it has been awarded a contract by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) to deliver two complete liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel systems.

The systems will be installed on the new generation of cruise ships which are currently being built by MHI for AIDA Cruises - the Rostock-headquartered company operated by the Carnival Group.

According to TGE, the 124,500 dwt ships, scheduled to be delivered in 2015 and 2016, will be the first cruise vessels in the world to be fitted with dual fuel engines, meaning that as well as running on conventional fuels, they will also be able to use liquefied gas, depending on its availability.

"The contract with MHI for a world-leading cruise line is a great success in recognition of the company’s efforts in developing environmentally friendly fuel gas systems for the marine industry," TGE said.
