The South African ports of Durban and Richards Bay have been closed until further notice, local sources have informed Bunker Index.

Bunkering at the two ports, which are located approximately 100 miles apart on South Africa's east coast, is said to have been suspended as a result of adverse weather conditions, with the area suffering strong winds, heavy rain and localised floods.

The government-run South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Severe Weather Warning, which the SAWS defines as "an alert calling for reaction due to a very high certainty of a severe weather hazard that is already occurring or imminent within 24 hours and that could lead to disruptive and disastrous conditions".

Torrential downpours in Durban have resulted in highways being closed and the Ugu District Municipality being declared a disaster zone.

For the South African bunker market, Bunker Index was informed today that the earliest delivery date for Richards Bay is currently October 16, whilst in Cape Town - located on the west coast - the earliest delivery is October 18.
