Pertamina investigates bunker spill


Oil spill is said to have taken place during a refuelling operation in Cilacap.

Indonesia's state owned oil and gas company Pertamina says it is currently investigating a bunker spill near Nuskambangan Island, Cilacap district, Central Java.

According to company sources, the spill is believed to have taken place when the oil tanker MT Asia 17 was being refuelled with 20,000 litres of marine fuel oil at the Area-70 Pier on October 2nd.

"During the pumping of the MFO there was a small amount of oil spill but though it was small when it is in the water it would contaminate a relatively wide area," Public Relations Section Head of Pertamina RU IV, Kurdi Susanto said regarding the incident.

Pertamina immediately deployed a team to handle the oil spill and recover the fuel. The company says it is still investigating the cause of the incident together with Cilacap's Environmental office.
