Cosco Shipping has named a new 325,000-DWT ore carrier, Yuan Hai Si Lu, at a ceremony in Yangzhou, China, marking the latest addition to the company’s fleet of smart and lower-carbon vessels.

Measuring 339.9 metres in length, the vessel is capable of adjusting its fuel mix between green methanol and conventional fuel, offering adaptability as low-carbon fuel options continue to develop within the industry. It also meets the International Maritime Organization’s Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) Phase 3 standard.

According to Cosco Shipping, Yuan Hai Si Lu is equipped with the world’s first digital ship delivery system, and the vessel’s hold capacity is said to be more than 40% larger than that of conventional ore carriers of the same type, enabling full-load transportation of both iron ore and lower-density bauxite. Its hull form has also been optimised to better handle complex wind and wave conditions in the mid- and high-latitude Indian Ocean.

Yuan Hai Si Lu’s onboard intelligent systems include panoramic situational awareness, safety warning and decision-support capabilities — intended to enhance navigation safety and operational efficiency.

The vessel is expected to enter service and commence its maiden voyage in October.
