Peru’s National Port Authority (APN) has announced the commissioning of what it describes as the first shore power system in Latin America, installed at the South Pier Container Terminal at the Port of Callao, operated by DP World Callao.

The onshore power supply (OPS) infrastructure enables compatible vessels to connect to the shoreside electrical grid while berthed, allowing them to switch off their auxiliary engines and thereby reduce fossil fuel consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and noise during port operations.

According to DP World Callao, the system is capable of reducing more than 6,300 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year, with the company noting that shore power technology is currently present in only around 3% of ports worldwide.

The system was formally commissioned at an official ceremony held at the South Pier Container Terminal, attended by senior government officials, representatives of the APN and national and port sector authorities.

APN stated that the introduction of this technology is in line with the strategic objectives of Peru’s National Port Development Plan (PNDP) and represents an advance in the development of the National Port System.

The authority added that it remains committed to promoting investments and initiatives that drive innovation, operational efficiency and sustainability, with the aim of consolidating Peru’s position as a logistics and port reference point in the region.
