Venture Energy and Sinopec HK complete 'Hong Kong’s largest ever green bunkering'

Delivery of 1,000 tonnes of methanol to ro-ro vessel hailed as new record for Hong Kong.

Venture Energy said the 1,000-tonne methanol bunkering operation demonstrates the Greater Bay Area’s potential to establish an integrated and sustainable marine fuel ecosystem covering production, logistics, storage and bunkering. Venture Energy Limited and Sinopec (Hong Kong) Limited have completed what is described as the largest single green bunkering operation conducted in Hong Kong to date, with 1,000 tonnes of methanol delivered to a roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) vessel at the port.

The operation, announced on 9 July, involved the supply of methanol by the bunkering vessel Da Qing 268 — managed by Wah Kwong Ship Management — to CM Shenzhen, a ro-ro vessel belonging to China Merchants Guangzhou RoRo Shipping Co., Ltd. (CM RoRo). The methanol was sourced from Shanghai Shenji Energy & Environmental Technology Co., Ltd. (Shenji Energy), a subsidiary of Shenergy Group, with Venture Energy arranging delivery.

According to Venture Energy, the operation demonstrates the company’s capability to connect demand in the Greater Bay Area with supply sources across North and East China, contributing to the development of a "green marine fuel supply chain" for the region.

Venture Energy added: "The successful operation further strengthens Hong Kong’s position as an international maritime centre and an emerging green fuel bunkering hub. It also demonstrates the Greater Bay Area’s potential to establish a competitive, integrated and sustainable marine fuel ecosystem covering production, logistics, storage, bunkering and end-use applications.

"Venture Energy will continue to collaborate with strategic partners across the green fuel value chain to support future bunkering operations and contribute to the development of low-carbon maritime solutions."

The announcement did not specify whether the methanol delivered in Hong Kong was biomethanol produced from sustainable biomass or waste, or e-methanol produced from renewable hydrogen combined with captured CO₂.

Venture Energy is a subsidiary of Wah Kwong, a privately held shipping group headquartered in Hong Kong with more than 70 years of history across shipowning, ship management, marine consultancy services and dry bulk operations.

Sinopec (Hong Kong) Limited, established in 1989, supplies marine fuel and operates two oil depots, 54 service stations and a tanker fleet in Hong Kong. It also built Hong Kong’s first hydrogen refuelling station.
