Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has signed new bio-LNG fuel supply agreements covering Northern Europe and the Mediterranean region, extending the use of the fuel across its fleet of LNG-fuelled car carriers.
Under the arrangements, Titan — part of Amsterdam-headquartered Molgas — will continue to supply bio-LNG in Northwest Europe, while Swiss energy company Axpo will take responsibility for supply in the Mediterranean, covering the ports of Málaga and Barcelona in Spain.
The Mediterranean agreement builds on a bio-LNG supply arrangement in Northwest Europe that commenced in March 2025, when MOL began using the fuel aboard the car carrier Celeste Ace. The latest deal extends that framework to include the Cielo Ace, which has been bunkered with bio-LNG from a dedicated bunkering vessel.
Bio-LNG is liquefied methane produced primarily from biomass sources such as livestock manure and food waste. MOL notes that the bio-LNG to be supplied under this initiative has a lifecycle carbon intensity of -15 gCO₂/MJ or less, measured from production through to consumption. The fuel is said to have obtained International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC-EU), a certification system established under the European Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) that verifies compliance with EU sustainability and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction standards.
MOL describes bio-LNG as a "bridge solution" in its transition strategy, allowing the group to utilise existing LNG fuel infrastructure while working towards carbon-neutral operations. The Tokyo-based company said the new agreements establish a framework for continuous and stable bio-LNG supply across both regions.
The move forms part of MOL's broader environmental strategy, outlined in its MOL Group Environmental Vision, which targets net-zero GHG emissions by 2050. Alongside bio-LNG, the group says it is pursuing the adoption of a range of alternative fuels, including synthetic LNG (e-methane), methanol, ammonia and hydrogen.
MOL added that it intends to expand the geographic reach, volume and quality of its bio-LNG usage going forward, while continuing to grow its LNG-fuelled fleet in parallel.
