Seaspan takes delivery of first 10,800-ceu dual-fuel LNG car carrier

Seaspan Corporation has taken delivery of the Glovis Lighthouse, the first vessel in a series of 10,800 CEU dual-fuel LNG pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs), with the newbuild having embarked on its maiden voyage from Singapore.

The vessel is among a small number of PCTCs globally to exceed 10,000 CEU, making it one of the largest car carriers in operation. It was developed in collaboration with automotive logistics company Hyundai Glovis and has been delivered under a long-term time charter to the firm.

The Glovis Lighthouse features 14 decks, including four liftable decks, and hoistable ramp systems designed to improve cargo flexibility and capacity. The dual-fuel LNG propulsion system is expected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 24% compared with conventional fuels, and the vessel's energy efficiency performance is said to exceed current regulatory standards.

The vessel is equipped with next-generation engine and fuel systems and a shaft generator, which Seaspan notes are intended to improve overall efficiency and minimise methane slip. The Glovis Lighthouse is also methanol- and ammonia-ready, supporting longer-term emissions reduction strategies as alternative fuel availability expands.

Seaspan's operating fleet consisted of 247 vessels as of 31 March, with a total fleet capacity of approximately 2.5 million TEU on a fully delivered basis.
