Lloyd’s Register has published a research report evaluating liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as a marine fuel, the third in its 'Fuel for thought' alternative fuels series.

The report, released on 25 May, examines the current state of LPG as a shipping fuel. The classification society notes that LPG is a widely available fossil fuel that offers emissions benefits compared to other fossil options.

The document explores potential further benefits from combining LPG with onboard carbon capture and from renewable LPG variants, should production of these potentially zero- or near-zero-emissions alternatives be scaled up.

Lloyd’s Register’s analysis covers safety considerations, drivers for adoption, production and supply chain infrastructure, and technology readiness for LPG as a marine fuel.

The report also examines regulatory factors, lifecycle assessment, ship operator demand and interest, and techno-economic drivers, including renewable LPG production.

Lloyd’s Register adds that the study assesses the potential implications of widespread LPG adoption as a marine fuel and its role in achieving a sustainable future for the shipping industry.

The LPG report can be dowloaded via Lloyd’s Register's website.
