The global fleet of dual-fuel container ships and vehicle carriers has reached 1,204 units, either delivered or on order, according to the World Shipping Council (WSC).

The council published its latest Dual-Fuel Fleet Dashboard update on 12 May. The data track liner shipping investment in ships capable of operating on renewable and lower-emission fuels.

As of March 2026, 440 dual-fuel container and vehicle transport vessels were in service, representing a 65% year-on-year increase.

The orderbook covers a further 764 units. WSC reported that 78% of boxship newbuilds, 94% of automotive carrier orders and 17% of other fleet additions are now dual-fuel.

The 1,204 delivered and contracted container and car transport ships represent more than $180bn in private investment.

Joe Kramek, president and chief executive officer of WSC, said: “These vessels are long-term investments built with flexibility in mind. Ships built today will operate for decades, and the ability to operate on different fuel pathways helps reduce risk, strengthen energy security, and support more resilient global supply chains. Continued constructive engagement at the IMO remains essential to provide the global regulatory certainty needed to scale investment in alternative fuels.”
