The Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) has highlighted its biofuel trials with BHP in a partner spotlight linked to its latest impact report.

Emma Roberts, vice president of maritime and supply chain excellence at BHP, discussed the mining group’s work with GCMD and the practical issues involved in scaling up alternative marine fuels from pilot projects to wider use.

“By working together, we’re helping de-risk new fuel pathways not only for BHP’s operations, but also for the wider maritime industry — supporting a practical and scalable transition to lower-carbon shipping,” Roberts said.

GCMD noted that biofuels could offer a near-term decarbonisation route, but broader uptake depends on progress across supply availability, pricing, operational readiness and traceability.

The partner feature covers BHP’s reasons for joining GCMD’s trials, the main obstacles facing marine biofuel use and the importance of verifying alternative fuel claims.

Roberts’ comments also address sustainable feedstocks, cost barriers and assurance frameworks, according to GCMD.

The Singapore-based organisation stated that its work with BHP aims to strengthen confidence in biofuels and support shipping’s move towards lower-carbon operations.
