China Classification Society (CCS) has completed the construction survey and certification of Ning Yuan Dian Kun, which it described as the world’s largest pure-electric intelligent seagoing vessel and China’s first high-end vessel of its kind.
Invested in by Ningbo Ocean Shipping Co., Ltd. and built by Jiangxi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., the 740-teu open-top boxship measures 127.8 metres in length and features a twin-engine, twin-propeller arrangement with a top speed of 11.5 knots.
CCS said the ship is equipped with 10 containerised batteries as its main power source and supports both high-voltage shore charging and rapid battery swapping. A photovoltaic system has also been installed. The classification society noted that these features allow zero-emission operations and could cut carbon dioxide emissions by about 1,462 tonnes a year compared with conventional tonnage.
The vessel also holds CCS i-ship (M, No, I) intelligent ship notations. Its integrated onboard system provides situational awareness, real-time route optimisation and comprehensive equipment monitoring, the class society emphasised.
Throughout the project, CCS provided technical support and survey services, including design reviews and discussions on key technical matters to support the ship's delivery.
China Classification Society stated that it would continue promoting the integration of green and smart technologies in shipbuilding as part of China’s shipping-sector upgrade.
