Lotte Fine Chemical says it has completed the world’s first commercial ammonia bunkering operation at the Port of Ulsan in South Korea.
The company stated that the milestone marked the first full green ammonia value chain, covering production, international transportation and final use as marine fuel.
The chain began with green ammonia produced using 100% renewable energy and ended with fuel supply to what it described as the world’s first ammonia-powered vessel built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries.
The South Korean chemicals producer noted that the development represented a step forward for a carbon-free energy ecosystem and for shipping decarbonisation.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has been developing ammonia-fuelled vessel designs as part of the maritime industry’s transition towards lower-carbon propulsion systems.
