Sumitomo Corporation, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) and NYK Bulkship (Asia) Pte. Ltd. (NYK Line) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly conduct a front-end engineering design (FEED) study and explore ownership of a newbuild ammonia bunkering vessel for use in Singapore.
The three companies said the project is intended to back the development of an ammonia supply chain in Singapore as the city-state builds its position in low- and zero-carbon marine fuels.
The MoU supports the ammonia value chain development initiative jointly led by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the Energy Market Authority (EMA), which aims to facilitate the adoption of this fuel’s pathway for power generation and marine fuel applications.
In October 2025, MPA and EMA appointed a consortium led by Keppel Ltd to conduct the next phase of the project to provide an ammonia infrastructure solution on Jurong Island for power generation and bunkering.
As a member of that consortium, and the sole recipient of a research and innovation grant from MPA under the Maritime Innovation and Technology Fund, Sumitomo Corporation will lead the FEED study to advance its bunkering proposal.
