Grimaldi Group has taken delivery of the Grande Tokyo, its 10th ammonia-ready pure car and truck carrier (PCTC), following a christening ceremony in Shanghai on 14 April.

The vessel is the final ship in a series of seven sister vessels built at the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and CSTC yards, bringing to a close a major investment programme by the group aimed at improving efficiency and environmental performance in vehicle logistics.

According to Grimaldi, the vessel’s name is intended as a tribute to Japan and its growing importance within the group’s network.

The christening ceremony was attended by representatives of both the shipyard and Grimaldi Group. Rena Kawachi of Mitsubishi Fuso served as godmother, in what the company described as a reflection of the close partnership supporting vehicle exports from Japan to international markets.

With capacity for more than 9,200 CEU, the Grande Tokyo has been fitted with advanced onboard technologies and built with readiness for future use of ammonia as a zero-carbon fuel.

Grimaldi said the vessel represents part of a new generation of ships aimed at supporting greener and lower-emission shipping solutions.

The ship’s maiden voyage will take it from China to Brazil, carrying vehicles on one of the group’s key trade routes.
