Nordic energy company Gasum and shipping company Wasaline have extended their bio-LNG supply agreement through 2027, continuing a partnership that supports what the companies describe as a carbon-neutral shipping corridor between Finland and Sweden.

Under the extended contract, Gasum will continue supplying bio-LNG to Wasaline’s vessel Aurora Botnia, which operates on the Vaasa–Umeå route using a combination of batteries and biogas.

Peter Ståhlberg, managing director of Wasaline, said: “Bio-LNG has played a central role in reducing our environmental footprint, and, together with batteries, eventually in establishing the first credible green shipping corridor across the Baltic Sea. Gasum has proven to be a dependable partner for us in this effort.”

The agreement also supports compliance with the FuelEU Maritime regulation. Wasaline is part of Swedish shipping group Stena Line, which operates 40 vessels and 20 routes in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean Sea. By running on bio-LNG, Wasaline’s vessel generates FuelEU Maritime regulation compliance for Stena Line’s other vessels, according to the announcement.

Gasum also offers FuelEU Maritime regulation compliance as a service to ships calling at EU ports through a verified pool system, where dedicated ships run on bio-LNG to generate compliance on behalf of vessels unable to meet the regulation’s requirements.

According to Gasum, the bio-LNG it provides is a renewable fuel with life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions that are, on average, 90% lower compared with fossil fuel use. When produced using livestock waste, the company claims emission reductions from biogas can exceed 100%.

Jacob Granqvist, vice president, maritime at Gasum, commented: “Gasum is proud to continue supporting Wasaline’s ambition to lead the way in sustainable shipping. We value our long-term partnership with Wasaline very highly.”

Gasum stated that its strategic priority is to scale up biogas production volumes and develop long-term procurement partnerships throughout Europe as emissions-related regulations and customer requirements tighten.

Wasaline operates a daily ferry service between Vaasa in Finland and Umeå in Sweden, serving both passengers and freight.
