Hong Kong has launched what is described as the world’s first administration-led training programme aimed at certifying maritime professionals to become trainers in alternative marine fuels, according to the Hong Kong Shipowners Association (HKSOA).

The 'Training-the-Trainer Programme: Green Maritime Fuel for Sustainable Shipping' began on 8 April. It is organised by the Hong Kong Maritime and Port Development Board and delivered by the Maritime Just Transition Task Force (MJTTF).

Hosted by the Department of Logistics and Maritime Studies at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the three-day programme brings together representatives from HKSOA member companies. Participants are being trained to become certified trainers in the safe and effective use of alternative marine fuels such as ammonia, methanol and hydrogen.

Opening remarks were delivered by Hon. Capt. Lothair Lam Ming-Fung, Member of the Legislative Council for the Transport Functional Constituency, who highlighted Hong Kong’s commitment to building the knowledge and skills needed for a greener maritime future.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has commended the programme, describing it as a “timely and important effort to support capacity-building in the transition toward sustainable shipping, complementing IMO’s ongoing revision of the STCW Convention and Code to prepare seafarers for the future of the industry”.

The MJTTF, which is delivering the programme, is led by the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), and the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), in collaboration with the IMO and ILO.

HKSOA said the initiative reflects Hong Kong’s role in advancing maritime sustainability and a just transition.
