Aurora Hydrogen has secured a $3 million investment from Oldendorff Overseas Investments (OOI), the investment platform of Hamburg-based Reederei NORD Group, to support the development of its hydrogen technology for marine applications.

The clean hydrogen technology company, which is developing a modular microwave-driven methane pyrolysis process, said the funding will help advance commercialisation. Aurora Hydrogen is part of the EIC Rose Rock portfolio.

The deal also includes a long-term commitment by OOI to purchase Aurora units to support the decarbonisation of Reederei NORD’s shipping and related logistics activities. According to the company, the agreement establishes a commercial pathway to deploy Aurora’s hydrogen technology across ports and maritime markets worldwide, particularly in Europe.

Aurora explained that its patented system produces hydrogen from natural gas while also creating a solid carbon co-product, removing the need for CO₂ capture or storage. The company added that its modular and scalable units are designed for deployment at ports, on vessels, and at industrial and logistics sites.

Bryce Campbell, President of Aurora Hydrogen, commented: “This strategic investment reflects strong commercial interest from customers that are actively working to decarbonise some of the world’s most challenging transportation sectors. The combination of growth capital and a long-term unit purchase commitment reinforces the real-world applicability of our technology.”

Nikolaus Oldendorff of Oldendorff Overseas Investments remarked: “Decarbonisation of maritime shipping requires solutions that are scalable, efficient, and easily integrated into existing infrastructure. Aurora’s microwave methane pyrolysis offers one of the cheapest paths to cleaner and affordable hydrogen – an important step toward achieving the maritime industry’s climate objectives.”

According to Aurora, it has achieved 99% microwave absorption within the reactor and more than 85% natural gas-to-hydrogen conversion across numerous operating campaigns, while also extending run times. The company is now working to optimise its demonstration plant for continuous hydrogen production as it moves towards commercial operations in 2027.

Aurora noted that it has raised $14 million to date from investors, including OOI, EIC Rose Rock, Energy Innovation Capital (EIC), Williams, Chevron Technology Ventures and Shell Ventures, along with around $10 million from the Canadian government and grant programmes including Natural Resources Canada, NGIF Accelerator, Alberta Innovates and Sustainable Development Technology Canada.

Founded in 2021, Aurora Hydrogen is headquartered in Edmonton, Canada. The company said its technology uses microwave energy to produce hydrogen without CO₂ emissions or water.

Oldendorff Overseas Investments is an investment platform with maritime roots and a long-term focus on real assets. OOI is affiliated with Reederei NORD Group, a family-owned shipowner and manager with experience operating maritime assets around the world.
