CMA CGM has officially named CMA CGM Carmen, a 15,000-teu methanol-fuelled container ship, the French shipping line announced on 18 March.

The vessel was christened by its godmother, Ms Xing Yue (Luna), General Manager at Clarksons Research Services Limited (Greater China), in a ceremony attended by the ship’s master, Captain Kyaw Kyaw Lwin.

The newbuilding forms part of CMA CGM’s fleet development programme, which is designed to support its Net Zero Carbon 2050 objective.

Towards the end of February, CMA CGM named the 13,000-teu dual-fuel methanol-powered container ship CMA CGM Osmium, which will be deployed on the company’s M2X service, also known as the Mexico Express, operating on a loop between East Asia and Mexico.

Other recent additions to CMA CGM’s methanol-fuelled fleet include CMA CGM Thorium, which has also been deployed on CMA CGM's M2X service, and the 15,000-teu CMA CGM Monte Cristo — named as the box carrier's 400th fully owned vessel.

And two dual-fuel methanol ships named in December, CMA CGM Eugenie and CMA CGM Antigone, will operate on the BEX2 route connecting Asia, the Middle East and Mediterranean.
