AET completes first bio-LNG trial on dual-fuel tanker

Tanker operator tests renewable fuel ahead of FuelEU Maritime compliance requirements

AET has completed its first trial of bio-LNG on a dual-fuel tanker as part of preparations for compliance with upcoming European Union emissions regulations.

The trial took place on the Aframax tanker Eagle Brasilia, which bunkered bio-LNG in Rotterdam before undertaking a cross-European voyage. The vessel used the renewable fuel during the laden leg of the voyage to meet greenhouse gas intensity requirements under the FuelEU Maritime regulation, completing the journey on 10 February.

According to AET, the operation was carried out with technical guidance and approval from its engine partners and was completed without operational or performance issues. The company said the trial confirmed that bio-LNG is technically compatible with its existing dual-fuel propulsion systems and provided operational insights for its future fuel strategy.

FuelEU Maritime entered into force on 1 January 2025 and requires ships calling at European Union ports to gradually reduce the greenhouse gas intensity of the energy used on board, with progressively stricter limits extending through 2050.

Bio-LNG is produced from organic waste materials and considered a renewable alternative to conventional LNG. Because it has similar chemical properties, it can generally be used in LNG-fuelled vessels without modifications to the engine systems.

AET operates a fleet of tankers transporting crude oil and petroleum products. The company said the trial forms part of its broader strategy to reduce emissions from its operations.

The operator also acknowledged the contribution of the crew of Eagle Brasilia, its ship manager and internal decarbonisation teams in carrying out the trial.
