Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. has shipped its first Ammonia Fuel Supply System (AFSS) and Ammonia Gas Abatement System (AGAS) for use with ammonia-fuelled marine engines, marking its entry into this segment of alternative fuel support equipment.

The systems have been delivered to Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG) and are compatible with the company’s 7UEC50LSJA-HPSCR ammonia-fuelled marine engine. Commissioning is scheduled for a later date.

The AFSS is designed to ensure a stable and safe supply of ammonia to the engine, while the AGAS treats surplus ammonia generated during fuel switching between heavy oil and ammonia. Both systems are equipped with integrated control devices enabling remote and automatic operation, which Mitsubishi Shipbuilding said enhances efficiency and operational safety.

The delivery represents the first deployment of J-ENG’s 7UEC50LSJA-HPSCR engine in combination with Mitsubishi Shipbuilding’s ammonia fuel supply and treatment systems on an operational vessel.

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, part of the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group and headquartered in Tokyo, said it will continue to develop its capabilities in support of ammonia-fuelled vessels, a segment where demand is expected to grow as the maritime sector pursues decarbonisation targets.
