The Bahía de Bizkaia Gas (BBG) LNG storage and regasification plant at the Port of Bilbao has received International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC), enabling it to offer certified bio-LNG loading services to vessels and tankers.

The ISCC certification confirms compliance with sustainability criteria set by the European Commission and guarantees full traceability of the biomethane used to supply renewable-origin bio-LNG.

BBG, co-owned by Energiaren Euskal Erakundea (Ente Vasco de la Energía) and Enagás, has begun connecting biomethane producers with companies using the regasification plant, which can now certify LNG loads of renewable origin.

The terminal operates three LNG storage tanks with a combined capacity of 450,000 cbm and has a regasification capacity of 800,000 Nm³ per hour. In 2024, the facility regasified 550,887.4 GWh of natural gas.

BBG is also capable of handling Q-Max LNG carriers with capacities of up to 267,000 cbm. In 2024 alone, the terminal received 49 LNG vessels, unloading 7.84 million cbm of cargo and accounting for more than 10% of total traffic at the Port of Bilbao.

That same year, BBG handled 27.24% of Spain’s total LNG imports, supplying the equivalent of 200% of the Basque Country’s natural gas demand and around 16% of national demand.

The launch of certified bio-LNG services further strengthens Bilbao’s position as a decarbonisation hub for maritime transport and logistics in the Atlantic Arc, supporting the wider transition toward lower-emission marine fuels.
