Bahía de Bizkaia Gas (BBG) has begun offering bio-LNG loading services at its regasification and storage facility in the Port of Bilbao after successfully obtaining sustainability certification under the ISCC scheme.
The terminal, owned by the Basque Energy Agency (Ente Vasco de la Energía) and Enagás, completed its ISCC audit on 15 December 2025, clearing the way for renewable-origin biomethane to be supplied as bio-LNG with full traceability guarantees.
BBG officially launched the new service in January 2026, enabling bio-LNG loading for both tank trucks and vessels using the same operational procedures already in place for conventional LNG.
The ISCC certification confirms compliance with sustainability criteria set by the European Commission and verifies the traceability of biomethane used in the production of bio-LNG.
The service operates under the interconnected infrastructure framework established by European Regulation (EU) 996/2022, which facilitates links between regasification terminals, biomethane producers and bio-LNG consumers. Within this system, biomethane is injected into the gas network by producers and later purchased alongside Proofs of Sustainability (PoS), which certify the emissions reductions associated with the supplied fuel.
BBG said the model allows biomethane producers to connect directly with companies using the terminal, which can now certify renewable-origin LNG cargoes without requiring changes to existing ship or truck loading operations.
The company added that the launch strengthens its role in supporting the energy transition, expands its service portfolio, and contributes to the decarbonisation of gas and maritime fuel supply chains.
