Lehmann Marine has secured a contract to supply battery systems for three electric passenger ferries that will operate in the Port of Hamburg from 2028.

The Hamburg-based company will provide its CUBE energy storage systems for vessels being built by SET Schiffbau- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft Tangermünde mbH for HADAG Seetouristik und Fährdienst AG. The ferries will be HADAG’s first fully electric vessels.

Each of the Type 2030e ferries will measure approximately 30 metres in length and eight metres in beam, with capacity for 250 passengers. The vessels will be equipped with 3.8 MWh battery systems.

According to Lehmann Marine, the contract represents the company’s largest order to date. The firm describes its CUBE system as modular, with the design intended to enable integration into various vessel types and simplify maintenance operations.

The battery systems are already in use on vessels globally, the company said.

Alexander Lehmann, managing director of Lehmann Marine GmbH, commented: “As a company with roots in Hamburg competing in a strong global market, we are proud to contribute to the electrification of the HADAG fleet in the Port of Hamburg. This project demonstrates that high-performance battery systems are now a proven and practical solution for the emission-free operation of passenger vessels.”

Lars Köhler, head of sales at Lehmann Marine, added: “Fully electric propulsion systems are no longer just a technical alternative in ports — they are the decisive step toward eliminating emissions that affect residents and tourists alike. Our CUBE system enables quiet, clean, and climate-friendly port operations that protect the ecosystem and improve the environmental footprint of the Port of Hamburg.”

HADAG operates public ferry services in the Port of Hamburg. The operator is modernising its fleet with the addition of the electric vessels. SET Shipyard is building the ferries, with delivery scheduled for 2028.
