Viking Line green corridor project marks two years with biogas use and shore power progress


Turku-Stockholm route partnership reports tenfold increase in renewable biogas use and advancing electrification infrastructure.

Viking Line, Port of Turku and Ports of Stockholm have marked two years of their joint project to establish a fossil-free shipping corridor between Stockholm and Turku by 2035, reporting progress on biofuel adoption, shore power infrastructure and port emissions targets.

The partnership, which began on 6 February 2024, has developed a joint roadmap that is adjusted over time. On the project's two-year anniversary, representatives gathered aboard the Viking Glory ferry to review achievements and discuss remaining challenges.

Viking Line increased its use of renewable biogas tenfold in 2025 compared with 2024, according to the company. The ferries Viking Grace and Viking Glory maintained biogas use at 50 per cent throughout the first half of 2026.

Marcus Risberg, CEO of Viking Line, said: "The collaboration on the green corridor is a clear example of how Viking Line is driving the transition to emission-free shipping. In just two years, we have taken major steps forward, not least thanks to our investment in renewable biogas. But the work requires continued commitment and close cooperation between shipping companies and ports, as well as contributions from politicians, decision-makers, authorities and relevant companies."

The company has conducted preliminary studies for battery installations on both vessels and installed Elogrids — mesh grids designed to reduce water resistance and improve fuel efficiency — on the ships. Viking Line has also increased sales of what it describes as fossil-free travel across its fleet.

Port of Turku has progressed with studies and pilot projects for shore power supply at the quay. The port has prepared for future solutions with pipelines being built as part of the Ferry Terminal Turku project and launched its first public charging station for heavy vehicles at its truck parking area.

Erik Söderholm, CEO of Port of Turku, remarked: "We are proud of the concrete progress made during the first two years of the Green Shipping Corridor collaboration. The investigation and planning work for shore power has progressed as far as we have been able to prepare for future solutions with pipelines being built as part of the Ferry Terminal Turku project. Another important milestone is the launch of our first public charging station for heavy vehicles in Finnish ports, at our truck parking area."

Ports of Stockholm is working towards zero emissions from Viking Line ships at berth and collaborating with external actors on sustainable transport to and from the port. The port aims to provide opportunities for shipping companies to bunker fossil-free fuels.

Deniz Butros, Vice Mayor for Housing and Real Estate Stockholm and responsible for Ports of Stockholm, commented: "The City of Stockholm has high climate ambitions, and shipping is crucial to the transition to fossil-free transport. The task of ports is to make fossil-free alternatives available, and the Green Shipping Corridor project is truly at the forefront of this. I hope that our long-term strategic work on the port's electricity supply and electricity infrastructure will inspire the entire shipping industry."

The project's roadmap includes targets for zero emissions from Viking Line vessels at berth through necessary shore power infrastructure, zero-emission port facilities for all vehicles through charging infrastructure, and opportunities for shipping companies to bunker sustainable fuels. Gasum provides biogas bunkering services as part of the initiative.
