AET reports that it has added its first hybrid-electric dynamic positioning shuttle tanker (DPST) to its fleet.

The newbuild, constructed by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd., features dual-fuel capability and hybrid-electric propulsion technology, and has been secured on a long-term charter arrangement. The tanker is designed with what the company describes as lower-emissions readiness.

AET operates a fleet of 17 DPSTs deployed across Brazil and Norway. It is a global leader in shuttle tankers and operates one of the world's largest DPST fleets, with further growth planned.

The addition of hybrid-electric propulsion is designed to broaden lower-emissions options for the company's customers. AET noted that the technology enhances competitiveness across its fleet, which features dual-fuel capability across all tanker segments.

DPSTs are specialised tankers that use dynamic positioning systems to maintain their position during offshore loading operations, typically serving oil and gas production facilities. The vessels can operate in challenging weather conditions without the need for mooring systems.

The hybrid-electric propulsion system allows the vessel to combine conventional engines with electric power, potentially reducing fuel consumption and emissions during operations.
