Lloyd’s Register has awarded Approval in Principle (AiP) to GTT for its CUBIQ LNG fuel containment system during the LNG2026 conference in Qatar.
The newly developed cubic tank concept is intended to simplify engineering and vessel layout planning, ease construction at shipyards and release additional cargo space on board. The design is aimed at broadening the use of membrane-type LNG fuel tanks beyond specialist gas carriers into segments such as container and cruise shipping.
As part of the AiP, Lloyd’s Register confirmed the system’s ability to operate at a design pressure of 1 barg, a capability linked to compliance with cold ironing regulations.
Constantinos Chaelis, global gas segment director at Lloyd’s Register, said: “As the use of LNG as fuel grows at a considerable pace, expanding beyond gas carriers, it is critical that novel containment designs are assessed against robust rule requirements. This approval in principle supports the safe development of an innovative containment system that can be applied across a wider range of ship types.”
An Approval in Principle indicates that a design concept has been reviewed against applicable classification rules and regulatory standards, while further technical verification is required before full certification and commercial deployment.
GTT is best known for its membrane containment technologies used in LNG carriers and has increasingly focused on developing fuel tank solutions for vessels adopting LNG as a marine fuel.
