Reganosa has begun supplying bio-LNG for bunkering operations at its Mugardos Energy Terminal, enabling deliveries to both vessels and tanker trucks under European sustainability certification.
The Spanish terminal received ISCC EU certification, allowing LNG loaded at the facility to be sourced fully or partly from renewable feedstocks through a verified traceability and sustainability certificate system.
According to the company, the new service is intended to support compliance with FuelEU Maritime requirements, which mandate a gradual reduction in the greenhouse gas intensity of marine fuels.
“Bio-LNG is, without doubt, a real and effective alternative for advancing towards climate neutrality and complying with the objectives set by the FuelEU Maritime regulation, which requires the progressive reduction of the greenhouse gas intensity of marine fuels,” said Nuria Rivas, head of the Mugardos Energy Terminal. “Bio-LNG is one of the renewable fuels recognised to meet these objectives and allows net CO₂ emissions to be reduced by up to 92% compared to heavy fuel oil, the traditional fuel in the maritime sector.”
Reganosa said the certified supply meets environmental, social and traceability standards set by European authorities.
Bio-LNG is produced from organic waste and then liquefied to allow efficient storage and transport. The company added that it is fully compatible with conventional LNG, meaning it can be handled, stored and regasified in existing infrastructure without technical changes. Once regasified, it can also be injected into natural gas networks in the same way as fossil-derived gas.
The terminal said the introduction of bio-LNG bunkering forms part of its broader strategy to strengthen the long-term sustainability of operations as LNG continues to play a growing role in both maritime and land transport as a lower-emissions alternative to traditional fuels.
