LNG-fuelled container ships dominated alternative-fuel vessel orders in January, accounting for 16 of the 20 newbuilds placed during the month, according to data from DNV.

The remaining orders comprised one methanol-powered offshore vessel and three LPG-fuelled ships.

Total gross tonnage of alternative-fuel vessel orders reached 39.6 million GT in January, reflecting continued investment in large-scale tonnage as part of shipping’s decarbonisation efforts.

Commenting on the latest figures, Gasnam — a Spanish association focused on promoting sustainable transport using renewable gases — said: "This strong start to the year reinforces LNG’s role as a mature transition solution, driven by available infrastructure, proven performance and shipowners’ preference for large vessels within their decarbonization strategies."

The organisation added that the January figures highlight growing commitment to cleaner fleets, not only in the number of vessels ordered but also in the size and capital investment involved.

Gasnam characterised the start of 2026 as showing positive momentum for the energy transition, with rising order volumes, higher tonnage and broader uptake of alternative propulsion technologies.
