A.P. Moller - Maersk has taken delivery of Tangier Maersk, the first vessel in a new series of six mid-size container ships equipped with methanol-capable dual-fuel engines.

The handover took place at the Jingjiang yard of Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group in China, with the vessel delivered approximately three months ahead of the original schedule.

Each ship in the series has a nominal capacity of 9,000 TEU and is fitted with dual-fuel engines designed to operate on methanol, supporting Maersk’s ongoing fleet renewal and decarbonisation strategy.

Anda Cristescu, head of chartering and newbuilding at Maersk, said: "We are pleased to take delivery of Tangier Maersk, marking the first of six vessels in this new series. Together with the remaining vessels in the series, it will contribute to our ongoing fleet renewal and support our long-term competitiveness."

Following delivery, Tangier Maersk will call at Shanghai before being deployed on Maersk’s TP15 service, which links East Asia with the US Gulf Coast via the Panama Canal.

Maersk expects to take delivery of four additional vessels in the series later this year, with the final unit scheduled for handover in early 2027.

Maersk has stated that it aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its business by 2040, through a combination of new vessel technology, operational measures and fuels delivering lifecycle emissions reductions of at least 65% compared with conventional fossil marine fuels.
