The global fleet of dual-fuel container ships and vehicle carriers operating at sea has reached 400 vessels, according to data published by the World Shipping Council (WSC) on 2 February.

The figure represents an 83% increase from 218 vessels in 2024, according to the WSC’s Dual-Fuel Fleet Dashboard, which tracks the liner shipping industry’s investment in vessels capable of operating on renewable and lower-emission fuels.

The number of dual-fuel ships on order has also continued to grow, reaching 726 vessels as of December 2025, despite deliveries shifting from the orderbook to active operations. Dual-fuel vessels now account for 74% of all container ships and vehicle carriers on order.

In total, 1,126 dual-fuel container ships and vehicle carriers are now either delivered or on order — a 28% increase compared with 2024. The WSC states this represents over $150bn of investment by the liner shipping industry in these vessels.

The vessels are designed with the capability to switch to renewable and near-zero fuels as they become commercially viable and available at scale, according to the organization.
